I stepped closer to the door again, pressing my ear against the cool wood.
The only sound that could be heard was the mechanical buzz of my refrigerator as it rattled on.
Damn. This was looking like an ambush. In every single movie Iâd seen ever, it always ended terribly when the good guy knowingly went into the ambush, thinking they had the upper hand or something.
But what choice did I have?
I guess I could run back downstairs, and then try to scale the fire escape while still hammered. If I didnât fall off and break my neck, at the very least Iâd alert whoever was inside that I was on my way.
Alright then.
It was settled. I placed my hand on the doorknob to open it, then pulled back. A kick would serve me better here.
Readying myself, I threw my leg into the center of the door. It flew inwards, smashing into the wall behind it and sending paint chips flying. I leapt inside, swinging my blade around in a wild circle to fend off any incoming attack.
My dad stood there, half-raised off the couch in a self-defense position as he stared at me.
I lowered my blade. âDad? What are you doing in here?â
He straightened up, adjusting his coat a little. âI came to see you.â
My door whimpered and tilted downward as the top hinge broke loose.
I turned around and closed the door carefully, not really caring that it didnât shut right.
âYou couldâve said you were coming. Wouldâve saved my doorâs life.â
He rubbed his hands together. âI thought about it, but I was afraid youâd try and blow me off.â
Good point.
âGlad to see you remember your training though,â he said with twinkling eyes and a nod toward the door.
âNah, I only started doing that after the cops showed up.â
That brought him down a little. Good. The bastard had no right to barge in here and expect us to hug it out.
âYou want a beer or something?â I asked as I made my way into the kitchen.
âYou know I canât.â
I snorted, and opened the fridge. Annie remained silent in the drawer, probably to give Dad and I a sense of privacy. No doubt sheâd share her thoughts after he left.
âSo why exactly have I been graced with your presence, dearest father?â I asked as I cracked a beer.
He took a seat on the couch. âOur deal, remember? You promised to stay away from the crime scenes. And you have, correct?â
âSure have.â
That at least wasnât a lie.
Technically I hadnât been to a crime scene since we last saw each other, though I donât think dad would be all that pleased to hear about what Iâd been doing instead.
âPlease join me on the couch, then.â
My heart started to beat a little faster. Did this mean he actually did look into Williamâs disappearance? I moved to the couch, the cold glass of the beer bottle beginning to numb my hand.
âAfter we exchanged words at the vampire tomb site, Iâ¦I think you were right.â
I sat back, stunned.
